It is huge for business connections back home, I know. My brother-in-law (those kids' dad) does so much of his work "on the links" and is very successful.
I am just grateful I have nothing do with that world and don't care enough about money to ever have to.
But different strokes...

Up this way there's a big tournament once a year (dunno what its called or anything but its up near Southport)
Stumbled onto a train once full of people headed for it.
Originally thought it must have been football, was all groups of young lads on the beers.
Really surprised me tbh, always associated golf with boring middle aged middle class old tories.

Golf is superb.
You can play so many amazing courses all over the world and each is a different challenge.
Good players can play less good players competitively and it’s great for doing business.

The impression i get is that its often used to unwind, or as a backdrop to "talking business". As an accompaniment (or alternative) to having a beer.
Not my cup of tea (driving ranges are fun though) but can see the attraction.

I have the same trouble with golf.
9 shots on the first hole Saturday (Par 5)
3rd is a Par 3, tee shot lands 3 feet from the pin, missed the putt.
Walk round to the 4th and roll a 25 footer in for par.

My nephews golfed competitively before they gave it up to try to become professional hockey players (one still trying). So I had the chance to try it a fair bit, I find it so incredibly boring.
If you are going be out, walking, hike or canoe, either see something new or something with some adrenaline. If you want to compete, always prefer team stuff. Or play paintball, about the same cost and has both.
But of course, each to their own.

When you play golf like that it would still take a lot of practice to get the consistency. Golf is a cunt like that.

I love golf (playing that is not watching so much) Play off 18 but can seriously hit 13 or 14 if only my consistency was better. Last night perfect example - par, double bogey, par, triple bogey, birdie, par...….
Also a great movie buff but by christ there is some shit these days so would rather stick The Time Machine (60's) or Rear Window on again for the 1000'th time!

My main interest is running, which I've been doing since I was 19. I started running the mile, quickly moved up to the marathon before flitting between middle distance and marathon, for the last 30 years.
Age and related health problems have slowed me in recent years but I still managed a comeback parkrun last week, finishing around 200th out of 800+ finishers.
Apart from that, I enjoy watching rugby (mostly league) and long haul travel. Since retiring from my old job me and Mrs VH have spent a small fortune on our travels but I wouldn't have it any other way.
